Dry Chemical Powder Fire Suppression System
Dry Chemical Powder Fire Suppression System
As SF Fire & Ventilation Systems, we provide advanced dry chemical powder automatic fire suppression systems designed for both total flooding protection and local (zone-based) protection applications. These systems offer fast and effective fire extinguishing performance, particularly in high-risk industrial environments.
Total Flooding Protection
In total flooding applications, the system is engineered to cover the entire protected volume. Design calculations are based on key parameters such as:
- Room volume
- Ceiling height
- Average ambient temperature
- Ratio of unclosable openings (doors, windows, vents)
The objective is to create a fully protected environment where combustion cannot continue.
Local (Partial) Protection
Local protection systems are used where total flooding is not feasible or necessary. These systems are ideal for smaller, high-risk zones and provide a more economical solution.
Application types include:
- Overhead (top discharge) protection
- Side discharge protection
The system targets only the risk area, ensuring rapid and efficient fire suppression.
Operating Principle
Dry chemical powder systems extinguish fire by interrupting the chemical chain reaction of combustion. In addition, they:
- Form a coating layer over burning materials
- Block oxygen contact with flames
- Create a protective barrier on flammable liquid surfaces
- Prevent re-ignition through surface cooling and isolation
In total flooding applications, the system creates an atmosphere in which combustion cannot be sustained.
Application Areas
Dry chemical powder systems are widely used in industrial and hazardous environments such as:
- Open and closed paint spray booths
- Dipping tanks
- Coating machinery
- Drying ovens and furnaces
- Industrial production and storage facilities
- Flammable liquid storage tanks
- Printing and offset machines
- Chemical mixing tanks
- Generator rooms
- Pump rooms
- Electrical panel rooms
- Transformer stations
- Turbine and generator systems
System Components
The main components of a dry chemical powder fire suppression system include:
1. Storage Cylinders
Factory-filled cylinders equipped with valves, pressure gauges, and safety devices, available in capacities ranging from 30 kg to 1000 kg.
2. Discharge Mechanism
Mechanical or electrically actuated release system.
3. Nozzles (Discharge Devices)
- Local protection nozzles
- Total flooding nozzles
4. Detection Elements
- Heat detectors
- Flame detectors
- Fusible link elements
5. Control and Activation Lines
Signal and discharge infrastructure connecting detection and release systems.
System Operation
Upon fire detection:
- Heat or flame detectors or fusible links activate the system
- A signal is sent to the control panel
- Nitrogen propellant system is activated
- The actuator opens the cylinder valve
- Pressurized dry chemical powder is released into the discharge line
- The agent is distributed through nozzles into the protected area
The system can operate in both fully automatic mode and manual activation mode.
